It's a sad day today.

It is with a very heavy heart that I let you know that last night around 10 pm we lost our very beloved Midnight, the most special-est little lamb in the whole world!!! You may recall that she was our little black sheep, the one that we bottle fed forever! As the Vet explained it, she had failure to thrive, a direct result from not having had the Mother's milk she needed as a tiny little baby. She never really grew after a while, and while adorable, it was certainly not a good sign. She had a good little life with us, and we loved her so very much. She was so, so special! And she is so missed already by us and by the rest of her flock.... This was not supposed to happen!!! RIP little girl....

We certainly had a nice time! Both Saturday and Sunday the ladies felt a little challenged at the beginning, wondering... what the heck am I doing here?!! On Saturday with Beth's first spinning class and on Sunday with one of our Entrelac groups. But, by the end of both days, the ladies that were here left happy, and confident that they had made the right choice, ha! Spinning is not easy, it takes practice and perseverance, as does Entrelac...... :)

Hello everyone! Just want to bring you up to speed on our upcoming groups and classes! Our next class is going to be our spinning class with Beth, next Saturday May 21st. Our entrelac group will meet on Sunday May 22nd. We have had to postpone our sock class with Andi, since as many of you know, she unfortunately broke her shoulder and will need some time to recover.... We have had several one-on-one Lizard Ridge classes, and have scheduled a group class for Sunday June 5th.

I am going to order this beautiful book on Entrelac, written by my friend Rosemary Drysdale! Thank you Anita for bringing it in, and sharing it with the group.....
We spent a nice Sunday afternoon, hanging out and Entrelac-ing.... There were seven of us, each at different stages and sizes of our Entrelac projects, some working on shawls, some working on headbands, and some working on throws. By the end of the day, everyone left feeling right on track with their Entrelac, no more feeling intimidated by it!!
Our next Entrelac Knit-Along will be held on Sunday May 22nd at 2:00 pm. Space is limited so please email to sign up.

We have some very nice things planned for you during the month of May.... In addition to our Entrelac KAL that is starting up again, we have a series of classes set up. We hope you enjoy this line up and will join us for some fun. Please remember to sign up quickly, as our events have been fillilng up fast!

We will start off with our very much loved and very popular Lizard Ridge! Our store sample is on loan at a lovely yarn shop on Martha's Vineyard, but I am sure you will remember seeing it at the shop over the years.... Class with Anneke, on Sunday May 1st at 2:30 pm. If you have not knitted one of these yet, what have you been waiting for?! It's gorgeous and fun, and easy to knit... A must have for every knitter! $25 for a two hour class.

We have all been waiting for this one!! Andi will teach a two part sock class (pattern she has chosen will be announced soon....) starting on Sunday May 15th, at 2:30 pm... A great summer project! $25 per two hour session. Our sock class will be followed by a simple little Bar-B-Que which should be very nice....

A totally new adventure! Learn to spin your own yarn on a beautifully hand-crafted drop spindle! A total indulgence.... Beth will teach you how to spin, and you will be able to start knitting on a very special project with yarn spun by... you! We have some very special, luxurious, gorgeous roving by Abstract Fibers. It will make some awesome yarn!!

We had a very lovely Knitting-in-Color class with Pat on Saturday! And it was during the class that everyone decided that it was time to start up the Sunday Entrelac KAL once again.... We have had an overwhelming response to yesterday's announcement of this KAL so needless to say, it filled up very quickly!! Using up some of my Ella Rae Classic stash, I just started on my first yarn bomb project!! I measured the item that I want to decorate with my yarn bomb, and then started knitting up a very simple, very colorful first project! If this works out Ok, I have much bigger and better yarn bomb projects in mind..... I hope to share pictures of the finished piece, as a yarn bomb... real soon!! This could be a lot of fun!!!

Weekly Farm Update!

Running a farm is quite an interesting undertaking, there is so much going on all the time! And we do love it, including all the daily chores that have to get done... There are the sheep, the chickens, the feral and the domestic cats, and of course the dogs to take care of and shower with love and attention. Animals are so wonderful, and so incredibly smart, they teach us so much!! ♥♥♥♥♥
A couple of weeks ago another stray cat showed up at the front door, adorable, sweet and yes SOOO very pregnant.... She decided that rather than room with all the other cats she was going to take up with the chickens and the sheep, and has made their area her area as well, and they gave her a very warm welcome. We named her Cat-Man-Doo. She gave birth three days ago to two adorable little kittens, luckily only two... they willl be up for adoption in 7 weeks or so, stay tuned!!

Along with the joys of having your own little black lamb comes the responsibility of taking care of it, and Sophia is doing a wonderful job at this! Sophia and Midnight have bonded quite well already. Did you know they don't call them the little black sheep of the family for nothing, they really are quite different from the others in their personalities, at least our little Midnight is. She is very independent, and she knows exactly what she wants when she wants it... While the others are all flocking together, Midnight is exploring....

These absolutely gorgeous hand-crafted drop spindles will be available on the day we have our first spinning class with Beth, the second weekend in May. They are hand-crafted by Beth's husband Bill. They come in two different sizes, the smaller ones are $55 and the larger ones are $65. Beth recommends the larger one for a beginner spinner, as it is easier to start spinning a thicker yarn which requires a larger spindle....

Sophia has had her dream come true, her own little black Lamb!! And she named her "Midnight". Little Miss Midnight is the most independent, friendly and outgoing little lamb you can imagine! Amazing Animals!

Yesterday our newest family member joined us! Little Lamb "Quinn", she is a two month old wool sheep! Adorable, and oh so fluffy! She was a little unhappy at first, missing her Mom and her siblings.... But our Liam and Fiona took to her very quickly and tried their very hardest to make her feel right at home. They showed her where the yummy feed and alfalfa are, they showed her where their beds are, and they showed her the ropes around the chickens. She had a very good first night.
This morning, when it came time for Liam and Fiona to show little Quinn how to leave the enclosed area where they spend the night, and out into the fields for a full day of grazing.... Quinn stopped her in her tracks and did not follow them, she was scared, it was all too new for her still. They marched on without her, until.... she started crying. They then stopped in their tracks, looked back and yes, they turned around. They went back into the enclosure and sat down right next to her to keep her company. And she stopped crying.... I guess they will be patient with her, until she is ready to join them. Too, too cute.

Anneke's will open up for business again on January 25th! We will focus primarily on offering workshops and classes and even, when the time is right, sheep shearing demonstrations!! We will be offering weekly beginning knitting and crocheting classes, as well as technique classes, with Pat. We will offer once a month project classes with Andi. We will offer spinning classes with Beth. And we will bring in experts to show you the process from fleece, to fiber, to yarn! We may even throw in some classes to teach you all about organic vegetable and herb gardening. Our first class schedule will be available the first week in February.

The Youth Sheep Show.

Yesterday my 14 year old Sophia and I decided to embark on a new adventure. We headed to Orlando for the day, to visit the Youth Sheep Show, we really did not know what to expect but were curious to see what was in store, and we were meeting up with some new friends. We got a little lost, and it took us a while to get there, but finally we made it and we knew we were in the right place when we could see and smell all the livestock!
It was a very, very fun day and a great experience! We learned all about different breeds of sheep both wool sheep and hair sheep (now being referred to as shedding sheep....) We saw how they were shorn, bathed and prepped for the big showing. What was most fun, was that this show was being put on by kids all the way from 5 and 6 year olds, up to 18. It was quite a show, and let me tell you, it did not look easy! One young boy who was showing his sheep saw me spinning yarn on a drop spindle, and he stopped by to comment on the wool produced by his sheep, very charming.

Finally An Update From Anneke's!!!

My sincerest apologies for having gone off the screen for so long, but I cannot even begin to tell you how incredibly BUSY I have been! First of all, it took me a good two weeks to move ALL the stuff out that huge warehouse, I guess it is only when you move that you realize how much stuff you really have.... Then, I decided that this would be a great opportunity to do inventory, something that is so hard to do in the midst of running the business... And guess what, that took me well over two weeks, incredible!!
I have now finally settled on the new location (I am still keeping it a secret though, until I am ready to open up for business!!!) and now the fun begins. I will start to paint, to decorate, order new merchandise and have everything just perfect for the Grand Opening. Just remember that I said it will be smaller, Ok?... I am hoping for a December 1st opening, but it may be December 15th... Soon I will start to post pictures of the progress I am making.

Yesterday was the first day of our "Moving and Sample SALE" and what an incredibly busy day it was!! The store was hopping from the moment it opened until we closed at 6pm, just hopping. I want to thank all the ladies who helped me out, I could not have done it without you!! This absolutely gorgeous throw is Hara's version of the "Almond" throw in the Colinette "Orchard" book. Instead of using Colinette yarns, Hara knitted it in the Prism Confetti Big Ball, along with some Jade Sapphire Mongolian Cashmere and some AslanTrends Class. Thank you for allowing us to display this beautiful piece in the shop, it was a real treat!

We hope that those of you who are toughing it out and are in South Florida for these hot summer months, are having a great summer! Of course we also wish a great summer to those of you lucky enough to escape for a while.... so jealous...
As we have done every year at Anneke's, we are cutting back our hours so that we can get some much needed R&R and time with family! As announced, we will be closed Wednesday July 7th and Thursday July 8 and for the remainder of the month of July we will be open Thurs and Friday from 12 to 4, Saturday 11 to 5 and Sunday 12:30 to 5. We will be closed Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. In order to watch the Final of the World Cup, we will change our hours on Sunday July 11th. We will be open from 10:00-2:00.
In August we will keep the same hours as in July but we will close one week (to be announced) from Monday thru Friday.... In order to make it up to, we will continue our Christmas in July Sale, 25% off storewide.

Diane came by the shop today to show two of her nearly-finished knitted projects!! She does such beautiful work, and more importantly she gets all of her projects done in a timely manner!! I am so jealous.... She brought in her beautiful Squares blanket, a result of the Square-of-the Month class with Andi (please note, Diane added a few squares that were not part of the class....), and she brought in her gorgeous Noro Entrelac jacket... I teach with cotton yarn but I also demonstrate how to use novelty yarns as accents.

Hi Everyone,
I know it has been a while since we’ve gotten together, but the time has flown by for me! I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving and are feeling good about the upcoming holidays… I know they can be overwhelming. Getting together to knit is a nice break from the madness! 8-)

I love this next pattern. Maybe because it reminds me of a pattern I knit many years ago for someone I love dearly, maybe because it will take what you’ve picked up from our other squares. This pattern should match the size of our other squares, but here is a link to the pattern on Ravelry if you want to see it.

Hi everyone,
We’ve got a special square to knit. I call the pattern “Off-Kilter”. It can be done in one or multiple colors - and would be a great way to use up those leftover bits.

The square is knit in the round, so we will start the square using double-pointed needles and then switch over to a circular needle. Please bring both types of needles with you on Saturday (or call the shop to let them know what size you need).

Sunday Knitting Class With Megan: Chunky Holiday Vest

The holidays are just around the corner and if your family and friends have been asking for knitted gifts, this Chunky Vest is a great project. This vest knits up quickly in one piece-you only need to seam the shoulders and weave in a few ends. We have an excellent selection of yarn options in the shop to complete this project along with a ton of buttons perfect for finishing.

The classes will be on October 11th and 18th at 1:00 pm.

This will be a two part class: Part 1 will focus on getting your yarn and gauge and starting the body of the vest. Part 2…we’ll see how far you have gotten in the week and then we can go from there. I’ll help with the crochet edging (very simple edging- it makes the button holes for you) and any other finishing or questions on the construction.

You can take one or both classes depending on what type of help you think you need!

We found a great project that I’ll be teaching this Saturday (10/3). It’s called the Downtown Clutch and the pattern is available for free! 8-) It uses about 280 yds of sport wt yarn.

I started mine Sunday and it is already half done!

Classes Saturday September 26:

Square of the Month Class: 11:30 am

The next installment in the square of the month club will be heart pattern, intarsia style. Please bring two colors of yarn that compliment each other (or not, your choice). We will be working this pattern from a chart. I suggest bringing one of those clear plastic page sleeves, and some post-it notes to help mark your rows.

Even if you are not part of our square group, this is a great way to learn intarsia, sometimes referred to as picture knitting.

Finishing Class: Finishing can be fun! 3:00pm

Knitting really “came together” for me when I learned how to finish my knitting more professionally. Come join me on Saturday afternoon (3pm) and we will cover the finishing basics.

There is some homework, so if you have time to make some swatches, it really helps to have something in your hands to work on.

Using a light colored yarn and needles in a compatible size for that yarn.
Make 2:
cast on 10 stitches.
Row 1: K2, P2 across, end w/K2.
Row 2: P2, K2 across, end w/P2
Work for 8 rows
Then switch to garter stitch, knitting every row for 12 rows.

If you have a project that needs to be put together, you can bring that to class instead of the swatches.

Upcoming Weekend at Anneke's

Hello Everyone!

We hope that you had a wonderful Labor Day Weekend! We had a very, very busy one and we got a chance to see lots of you over the course of the weekend and catch up with you. It was wonderful. Some faces we had not seen in a while Lynn, Sam, Diane, Janice, Barbara, Gabriela, Maria Rosario, Michael, it was nice to see you all again! We also had a very nice BBQ party on Monday, Labor Day, despite the rain... Thank you so much to all who contributed to our potluck event! We didn't have such a large turnout for our party due to the weather and other activities everyone had planned for Labor Day, but those of us who were there had a wonderful time!

Well, we have some fun things planned for this upcoming weekend as well. Andi will be teaching a class on the gorgeous Ishbel Shawl designed by Ysolda Teague photo in last post. You can purchase this pattern on line and bring it with you to the class. The class will be from 11:30 - 2:00, and is $25. We have a beautiful Ishbel Shawl sample in the store, knitted by Megan, come in and check it out so you can get inspired for the class.....

Starting at 3:00, Andi will be available for a couple of private classes, at $20/hour as usual. Give us a call if you would like to set up some time with her.

On Sunday September 13th, we will be starting a Sock KAL, planned by Ann and Anita, here is what they have to say about it:

"Anita and I (I’m Ann), are planning a sock knit-along. Anita likes the sock called “Rick” in the Sock Innovation book of patterns by Cookie A.

Anita thinks that the Rick stitch pattern would be really darling as a scarf, too. So…, come to Anneke’s beginning on Sunday, September 13th, at 1300 hours (1 pm) and we’ll work some socks, or whatever. Socks make good holiday gifts and I, for one, need to start gifts now.

The Rick pattern calls for fingering weight yarn (Super fine #1), and double point needles, size 1 1/2 U.S. (2.5 mm) or circular needles, if that’s your preference for knitting socks. A light colored, monochromatic yarn would be best if one is new to sock knitting so that it’s easy to see the stitches to pick up on the heel. I also recommend reading The Yarn Harlots explanation for sock theory in Knitting Rules. Socks SEEMED complex to me until I read Stephanie Pearl-McPhee’s explanation of sock components in her book “Knitting Rules.” She has a sock pattern in that book that’s a good one to start with.

I am full of mischief, much more so than my siblings. I am full of energy and I am so very FAST!! I do love to be picked up and held all the time. Well, what can I say? I am just... gifted. I figured out how to eat cat food yeah, like two weeks ago, my siblings are still 100% dependent on Mom! Of course I still like that too, but I can eat anytime I want to.... I am twice the size of them. he he he I love to cuddle, and love food.... Love & Peace.... I should have been born in the 60's... I am all Love and Peace, I am super mellow and just like to chill out and watch the world go by. I am the very peaceful one in the family, can't you tell by my face?. I love to be held, and I love to talk.

Hi all you square people out there - and anyone else who secretly wishes they were square….

For our class this coming Saturday we will be doing a lattice style cable pattern. This is a great little project for those who want to move beyond basic cabling. Working this kind of cable pattern will help you understand how stitches move and interact with each other.

If you have a chance to get started before class, please cast on 48 stitches and work 6 rows in garter stitch (all knit rows). On the last row, place markers 3 stitches in from each edge. (Lori: the pattern is a multiple of 8, so I suggest you cast on 40.)

For those of you who are on Ravelyr, go ahead and use this link to see a sample of another lattice cable pattern. We are not making this pattern, but ours will be similar. Similar pattern

What kind of a KAL would you like ~ Need your opinions!

Hi Everyone!
Today was the first day of school here in Dade County, which means that now many of us will settle back into some kind of a routine…. Now if Hurricane season would just come to an end, and the temperatures would drop drastically…. I would be so happy.
Anyway, as most of you are starting to come back into town and as we are all getting back into our own routines, we have had requests for some regular KAL’s again. We had quite a few in the past, the Lizard Ridge, the Entrelac, the “crack” Shawl, the “crack” purse, and so on. We want to start this up again, but we want your suggestions, opinions, requests….
Here is what we have in mind. Maybe having two KAL’s per week, one during the week and one on Sunday afternoons? Saturdays are just too busy, and there would be nowhere to sit?!!
During the week, how about mid day to early afternoon? This way those of you who have children coming home from school could still get home in time? How about not limiting the KAL to one specific project, or do you prefer it if everyone is knitting the same thing?
Will be posting this to all of our email list, as well as on our Ravelry group, "friends of Anneke's Needleworks". And we look forward to lots and lots of responses so that we can announce our new KAL’s come September, right after Labor Day.

Everyone is welcome to come today to work on a project of their choosing. Ellen is working on the tunic and Gay-Lynne has moved on to the Copenhagen jacket…I’ll see if I can figure out how to post a picture, but if not, it is on Ravelry. It is for an intermediate to advanced crocheter. It requires several different stitches, but there is no shaping, so if you are feeling adventurous, come in and we will give it a try. I am still very early on in the project, but I think it is going to make a great piece.

If anyone wants to start the tunic, granny square blanket or something that they already have a pattern for, I’ll see you today at 12:30.

Anita brought in her pride and joy PJ, an adorable Jack Russell Terrier puppy! (She calls him her Jack Russell Terrorist because he is so spunky!) Yes, that's Gigi glaring at him wondering if he is planning to jump on that table with her..... PJ was full of energy and wanting to play with Gigi, but she wasn't having ANY that. Cats....

In the end she did kind of warm up to the adorable little PJ.

Baby Duck Drama Today ~ Emily, Marilyn and Wany to the RESCUE!!!

Well, we had another very full house Saturday today, with Andi’s great Hexagon class going on, our sample Sale and lots of people in the shop. When all of a sudden our “Mailman Lady” comes to the door to deliver the mail, and she sadly looks at me and says…. “I have very bad news about the ducks.”
Well you all know how I feel about our neighborhood ducks, so obviously my heart sank.
She said that as she was delivering the mail, the Mama duck kept getting between her legs wanting to poke her like she had something to say to her. So she followed the Mama duck to see what was going on, and found that 12 little ducklings had fallen through the drain and there was no way Mama duck could get them out.
So I mentioned it to people in the shop and Emily and Marilyn and then Wany all set off to the rescue. Meanwhile I called 911 and they connected us to the Fire Rescue who said they were on their way!
Marilyn got 10 of the little ducklings out and they were all put into a US Mail bin until they were re-united with their Mama who was frantically hiding in the bushes…. And then the handsome Fire Rescue gentlemen arrived and rescued the other two that Marilyn could not get to.
Whew! A close call…

This project is nearly impossible to put down. I snapped a few pics to entice you all! The Noro Silk Garden will keep this light for our climate, but more than that… the color is so luscious!!!!

The pattern is easy enough to remember once you get going. Please join us on Saturday, August 8th for this knit-along. The pattern is available for purchase on Ravelry - hexagon blanket. The pattern has schematics for making any size - from baby blanket, to house cozy! I’m making a twin-sized version for the daybed in my yarn room. (yes, my yarn has it’s own room.)

Lean a little to the left, Lean a little to the right......

Hello all you Squares out there! This coming Saturday’s pattern is all set and ready for you to enjoy. We’ll be doing a design named Tilting Blocks. If you want to get a head start, cast on 46 stitches and knit 6 rows.

(Lori - the repeat is 8 stitches, so you should cast on a multiple of 8, plus 6 - which ever number is close to what you’ve casted on for the other blocks.)
